New Driving Licence Regulation (temporary)
The new temporary driving licence regulation has been implemented and first time driving licence applicants must now apply for a driving licence at a local driving school.
You will first be provided with a provisional licence followed by a 5 year licence.
A theory test also needs to be passed (mostly road signs). A booklet will be provided by the driving school.
The total cost for lessons + licence is 6000 TL.

For 180 days from the date of entry of this (Amendment) Regulation,
the following rules are to be applied to foreign driving license holders :
(1) A person holding a valid driving license issued in a foreign country needs to have obtained a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus within the period specified in paragraph (3) of Article 45
Article 45 paragraph 3 states that this is within 1 month of losing visitor status in the TRNC.
(2) A valid driving licence issued in a foreign country other than the Republic of Turkey.
person needs to;
(A) Apply to the Driver's License Renewal Unit by submitting their current
driving license and pay the fee for a 5 (five) year TRNC driving license.
(B) Attend a driving school within one week from the date of application. The applicant must take driving lessons for a minimum of five days, where eight hours are day-time and two hours are night-time lessons.
These lessons are to be under the supervision of a driving school instructor and the vehicle used needs to one provided by the driving school.
(C) At the end of the five-day training period, the driving school will issue a signed and stamped document declaring that the lessons have been completed.
(Ç) The applicant needs to take the document obtained from the driving school and submit it together with the receipt received from the Driving Licence Renewal Unit and apply for a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus driving licence within one month.
2. This Regulation shall enter into force from the date of its publication in the Resmi (Official) Gazette.
If you visit the TRNC as a tourist you are able to use your current national driving license when driving with in the TRNC for up to 3 months. If you remain longer in the TRNC or you have residency on the island you need to apply for a TRNC driving license. If you continue to drive without obtaining a TRNC license there is a risk that if you have an accident you will not be covered by insurance.
Foreign citizens, with the exception of Citizens of Turkey, EU member states (including the UK), Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, must take a written and practical exam in order to obtain a TRNC driving licence.

⦁ Passport original & a photocopy of your photo page together with your current residence stamp/residency document
⦁ 2 passport size photos
⦁ National Driving Licence original & photocopy
⦁ Test Results from Driving & Theory test (if applicable)
A new TRNC driving licence which will be compatible with international standards and internationally recognised will be introduced this year (pictured above).
If you have a current TRNC driving licence with >2 years before expiry, will be able to change your old licence for a new one, free of charge. If your licence expires in <2 two years will be need to pay a fee to switch to the new licence.
For new driving licence applications you need to apply personally at the Tax Office in Lefkosa. For renewals, it is possible to get someone to submit the filled and signed renewal form to the Tax Office on your behalf.
The new licences will contain a multiple laser symbol and a chip, together with other specifications making its’ duplication impossible. The new driving licences will also use new internationally standard vehicle classifications.
